Rabona invited us for lunch. It was delicious, with chapati, baked chicken, fresh sliced veggies, watermelon, beef stew, and potato rounds. They are so gracious, loving and kind. Farrell and I are so impressed with their faith in Jesus Christ and His Gospel. Pres. Rabona is our District President. I asked for him to share his conversion story. When they were newly married, Lula was already a member. Pres. Rabona eventually wanted to join but didn’t know if he could give up drinking his wine from Italy. Lulu loves flowers and she told him if he would pour the wine over the flowers in the garden they would really grow well. He believed her and wanting her to be happy with more flowers he took all of the fancy bottles of wine and poured them over the flowers. He said that she was surprised that he did it. But it worked, not more flowers but after one week he had no desire to drink anymore. They make me smile. They are hunters and the area has been populated so there was less area for them to hunt animals for food. They have turned to buying corn, grinding it and selling it and also using it to make ugsli, a main staple food here in Tanzania. It has been difficult at times and yet wonderful!. With all of these things it is humbling as we continue to learn to stretch and grow. We continue to turn to Jesus Christ and to go forward each day one step at a time. There have been so many tender mercies which fills us with gratitude. This beautiful picture by Kate Lee shows how we can and need to give the Savior our weaknesses and our burdens. Jesus is always there for us and will walk with us. A favorite song is, “I Will Walk With Jesus” who promises us, and “I Will Walk With You.” We know this is true. This is a special time of year. We do miss our family, extended family and friends. We enjoyed being with them and getting to know them better. We have spent most of our time here with the Dar es Salaam church members. Our mission President and his wife are very busy. He is the mission Pres. Of Tanzania and the main priesthood leader of the country. There is alot of traveling and training. They have three children. Our choir director is on the far left. We also found out that he is on the team that translates the General Conferences for the church into the Swahili language, along with his sister and brother. He shared with us how when he was young his father wanted his children to learn English. Every weekday morning at 5am he taught them for one hour. They went to school learning in Swahili, and at 4pm and 9pm he taught his chldren English again for another hour each. I can see how they were prepared to be translators now. He had the opportunity to do Pres. I am enjoying teaching piano lessons from 5-6 students. I know of very few who play the piano here. They are very limited in their ability to play and are used to singing acapella. There was a couple who a number of years ago established a program where an individual who cannot get lessons can participate. If they get where they can play a couple of hymns from the simplified hymnbook and help teach someone else they get to keep a small keyboard. It was difficult for her to lose her grandfather. I asked her what she remembered about him and she suddenly began to smile and commented on his big smile. It is very difficult here for people to be able to get a degree because of the difficulty of funding. Gerald is one of the guards at our villa. He invited us to come to his home and meet his family. It is in a nice location, there is a stream nearby, and a large tree that offers shade against the heat of the sun. When I asked Bravo about memories of his childhood his eyes lit up and he started to share about his extended family. It reminded me of the love I have for my own and extended family. We did feel of their sorrow, the two sisters of Gerald had just found out the sad news and sadly made the comment, “He is gone, he is gone.” Death is so final. It touched our hearts as they shared emotions. We felt of the love and support of family and friends who were there helping. They were so gracious. We felt humbled to be there with them. It is about away 2 hours from our home. It was so nice to be out and to be with the group of Young adults in the branch we attend. None of them had ever been able to visit this. They really enjoyed it. We didn’t realize that we wiuld hike 6 kilometers which had some steep parts. A few of the young women had dress sandals, They did well and luckily we did too! At the end we came to a very steep rough and uneven dirt trail that we had to go up. At this point I was pretty tired and was surprised to have such a steep climb at the end of the trail. I had just barely started when suddenly I saw a hand reaching out to help me. One of the young women was suddenly there for me! We started up and had 3 sections to climb. There are some very nice highways and then the road suddenly becomes dirt and often becomes narrow and very bumpy. We see the people living in very humble conditions. it has been very different for us. We are realizing that different isn’t bad or wrong. It’s just ….different . We realize that it is normal for them. They are hardworking, intelligent, kind, resilient and often we see people laughing and visiting. We really enjoyed it. The next morning. We had to leave at 5 AM , two of tthe Missionaries didn’t hear their alarm so we were running late. And then, I looked down and saw a Missionary starting to lace up his tennis shoes. I was a little concerned about being late. We made it and everything was fine. Later that day after Farrell had taken them home, they live sn hour away, we came to our apartment. As we walked in our door we looked down and there were these shoes . The missionary had forgotten to take them. He works every day of the week except for Monday. I just met the branch president who loves music. When he was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist, he enjoyed singing. He wants to learn to play the piano so he can play the hymns. He says that he has started coming and practicing a little every day. He speaks very little English. I told him I would help him learn, so I will start going a half hour early before we meet our guard and the missionaries . It is exciting to have someone who really wants to learn to play the piano, but there will be that language barrier. I have learned more Swahili, but will keep trying. We are realizing that these big Dutch oven pots are what they use to cook the rice. They also served chicken, one piece of fruit and a little bit of a coleslaw salad. The food was good. We were also impressed with how the youth are so involved in helping set up and clean up. For the meeting, We were asked to share our testimonies, I accompanied the songs and later we helped with a game. We had them play Pictionary, using words with family history, and also charades. It was really fun watching the children get into the acting. They got to pretend they were helping someone, show how they could help clean the house, and help make dinner. They were creative and enjoyed it. When making a meal, All of the little children started to pretend they were making ugala, it is made from cornmeal.
